How to Heal Emotional Hurt: Vallalar’s Practical Path

The Saint-Scientist Vallalar has a precise answer for what you came here for, which is how to heal emotional hurt. When the pain is deep, advice feels hollow and the world seems to move on without you. It’s an experience that can make you feel utterly alone, walled off by a grief that has no words. It is a weight no one else can see. Much writing about emotional pain offers theories or mental techniques. Vallalar offered something different: a physical starting point for a spiritual problem. To understand his method, we need to look at the man himself.

Ramalinga Swamigal, known as Vallalar, was a 19th-century Tamil mystic whose collected writings, the Thiru Arutpa, remain one of the most extraordinary spiritual records ever produced. His life was filled with remarkable feats—though he dismissed anything supernatural, insisting that everything he did was a science. He taught that the human body was capable of a radical transformation into a body of light, and that compassion was the master key to this process. On January 30, 1874, accounts from those present record that he locked himself in a room in Mettukuppam and was never seen again—his body never found. This event is documented by government records and by British Collector John Henry Garstin.

The First Step When You Can’t Think: An Anchor for the Mind

Emotional pain and grief are among the most isolating experiences a person can have. In the acute moment, when thoughts are racing or frozen, no amount of good advice makes the burden lighter. Vallalar’s practical teaching begins here, not with an explanation but with one simple act.

He offered the Maha-mantra as an anchor for the mind when everything else is chaos. It is not meant to make the pain disappear or to force a positive feeling. Its purpose is to give the mind one solid thing to hold onto when it is being pulled apart by memory, fear, or sorrow.

The mantra is:
Aruṭ Perum Jōti — Aruṭ Perum Jōti —
Taṇi Perum Karuṇai — Aruṭ Perum Jōti

This translates to:
The Vast Grace-Light. The Vast Grace-Light.
The Incomparable Great Compassion. The Vast Grace-Light.

The practice is simple recitation, spoken aloud or silently. There is no need to understand its deeper meaning at first. The rhythm and sound provide a steadying influence, a point of focus outside the internal storm. It is a tool to use when you cannot think your way out of the pain.

How to Heal Emotional Hurt by Lightening Your Physical Load

Vallalar taught that the body and mind are not separate. The distress we carry emotionally is amplified by the distress we consume physically. His solution was a clean diet, not for reasons of purity or dogma, but for a very practical reason: to stop ingesting the suffering of other beings.

According to his teachings in texts like Nithya Karma Vidhi, when an animal is killed, its body is saturated with the chemicals of fear and pain. Consuming its flesh means taking that fear and pain into our own system. When we are already struggling with our own emotional hurt, this adds another layer of psychic weight, making the healing process heavier and slower.

By choosing a diet free from animal products, we lighten this load. Vallalar’s path is one of subtraction. It is not about adding a complex new practice, but about removing a source of agitation and suffering from our physical body. This creates a clearer, calmer internal environment where emotional wounds have a better chance to heal.

The Counterintuitive Cure: Compassion for Another Being

When we are in deep pain, the natural instinct is to turn inward, to focus on the wound. Vallalar’s teaching offers a radical alternative: turn outward. He showed a path through grief that does not require understanding it first, and this path is built on Jeeva Karunyam, or active compassion toward other living beings.

This is not a grand, abstract idea. It is a small, physical action. It is the act of feeding one hungry person. It is giving water to a thirsty animal. It is relieving the suffering of another being, even when—and especially when—you are in pain yourself.

Vallalar taught that this act breaks the spell of self-focused suffering. For a moment, your attention is completely on the needs of another. In that moment of service, the crushing weight of your own grief is lifted, because your focus has been moved from your inner world to the outer world. This practice directly counters the isolation that makes emotional hurt so difficult to bear.

This can be as simple as leaving a bowl of water out for birds on a hot day. In that moment of focusing on another’s thirst, Vallalar taught that our own internal storm quiets, even if just for a minute. It creates a small opening for Grace to enter.

One Concrete Action to Take Today

You do not need to understand this entire path to begin. Vallalar’s method is about action, not theory. If you are struggling with emotional hurt right now, take one small step outward.

Before you try to fix your own pain today, find one living being—a person, a bird, a stray animal—and give it food or water. Do it without expectation. Simply perform the act and notice what happens in your own body in that moment. This is the beginning of the path Vallalar laid out. It is simple, physical, and it works.
