How to Deal With Grief Spiritually: Vallalar’s Path

The Saint-Scientist Vallalar has a precise answer for what you came here for, which is how to deal withgrief spiritually.

Emotional pain and grief are among the most isolating experiences a person can have. When the weight is this heavy, no amount of good advice makes it lighter. It can feel like the world has gone silent, and you are the only one who can hear it. Much spiritual advice asks you to understand your pain before you can heal it. Vallalar offered a path that begins not with explanation, but with one simple act. To understand why this matters, we need to look at the man who showed the way.

The Life and Teachings of Vallalar

Portrait of Ramalinga Swamigal, known as Vallalar

Ramalinga Swamigal, known as Vallalar, was a 19th-century Tamil mystic whose collected writings, the Thiru Arutpa, remain one of the most extraordinary spiritual records ever produced. His life was filled with remarkable featsβ€”though he dismissed anything supernatural, insisting that everything he did was a science. He taught a universal path of compassion and self-purification, open to people of any faith or background. On January 30, 1874, accounts from those present record that he locked himself in a room in Mettukuppam and was never seen againβ€”his body never found. This event is documented by government records and by British Collector John Henry Garstin.

An Anchor When Everything Is Chaos

In the acute moment of grief, the mind is chaos. Thoughts repeat, pain circles, and there seems to be no solid ground. Vallalar’s practical teaching begins here, not with a philosophy to believe, but with an anchor for the mind. He offered the Maha-mantra as a tool to hold onto when everything else is moving too fast.

The practice is to recite it, silently or aloud:

AruαΉ Perum Jōti β€” AruαΉ Perum Jōti β€”
TaαΉ‡i Perum KaruαΉ‡ai β€” AruαΉ Perum Jōti

The translation is:

The Vast Grace-Light. The Vast Grace-Light.
The Incomparable Great Compassion. The Vast Grace-Light.

This is not a prayer asking for something. It is a statement of what is real, a sound that gives the mind a single, stable point of focus. By repeating it, you give the frantic energy of grief one place to go. You are not trying to stop the pain or understand it. You are just holding the anchor.

How to Deal With Grief Spiritually When You Have No Energy

Grief is exhausting. It drains the body of its will and the spirit of its light. Vallalar’s path is designed for this state of depletion. It does not demand great feats of spiritual effort. It asks for small, consistent adjustments that create the conditions for grace to enter. This happens through two other practices that support the mantra: a clean diet and compassionate service.

Vallalar taught that the food we eat directly impacts our inner state. In his work Nithya Karma Vidhi, he outlined a diet free from the suffering of other beings. He taught that eating meat introduces the fear and pain of the slaughtered animal into our own system. When we are already carrying the heavy burden of grief, this added agitation makes it harder to find peace. Choosing a clean, plant-based diet removes this unseen disturbance. It is a quiet act of compassion for oneself, creating a calmer inner environment where healing can begin.

The second practice is Jeeva Karunyam, or active compassion for all living beings. This is perhaps Vallalar’s most direct medicine for the isolation of grief. The pain turns us inward, making our world smaller and smaller until it contains only our own suffering. Vallalar’s instruction is to turn outward, even for a moment.

This does not have to be a grand gesture. It can be as simple as putting out a bowl of water for a stray dog, feeding a handful of rice to the birds, or taking a moment to help a neighbor carry their groceries. The act itself breaks the spell of self-focus. It reminds the soul that it is still connected to the flow of life, capable of giving and receiving care.

A Path That Does Not Require Understanding

The power of Vallalar’s approach is its immediacy. It does not require you to first process, analyze, or come to terms with your loss. The intellect, in a state of grief, is often the source of circular thinking and amplified pain. Vallalar’s path bypasses the intellect and works directly on the body and the spirit.

The mantra gives the mind a job to do, preventing it from drowning in sorrow.

The clean diet calms the physical body, reducing internal static and agitation.

The act of service reconnects the heart to the world, breaking the profound isolation that grief creates.

Together, these three simple, practical steps create a foundation. They do not magically erase the pain, but they build a vessel strong enough to hold it without breaking. They allow the Grace-Light, the Arut Perum Jōti, to do its work of healing from the inside out, on its own time. You do not have to understand it for it to work. You only have to do it.

Your First Step Out of the Silence

Vallalar’s teaching is not a concept to be considered but an action to be taken. If you are in pain right now, here is one concrete thing to do.

Before you read another article or close this window, find one living being nearby. It could be a person in your home, a stray cat on the street, or even a houseplant that needs water. Perform one small act to ease its existence. Offer a kind word, a bowl of food, a glass of water. Do not do it to feel better. Do it simply because it needs to be done. This is the first step on Vallalar’s path through grief.
