How Saints Transcended Physical Death: Vallalar’s 3 Stages

The Saint-Scientist Vallalar has a precise answer for what you came here for, which is how saints transcended physical death. Below, you will find the three-stage body transformation Vallalar documented in Thiru Arutpa β€” a science for making the physical form itself immortal.

Most spiritual traditions answer the question of death by describing what happens to the soul after it leaves the body. It’s a question you have likely asked many times. Vallalar asked a different question: what if the body itself could be transformed so that physical death becomes unnecessary? To understand his answer, we must first look at the man who lived it.

The Life and Teachings of Vallalar

Ramalinga Swamigal, known as Vallalar, was a 19th-century Tamil mystic whose collected writings, the Thiru Arutpa, remain one of the most extraordinary spiritual records ever produced. His life was filled with remarkable feats β€” though he dismissed anything supernatural, insisting that everything he did was a science. This science was centered on the reality of a divine compassion and intelligence he called Arut Perum Jothi, the Vast Grace-Light.

On January 30, 1874, accounts from those present record that he locked himself in a room in Mettukuppam and was never seen again β€” his body never found. This event is documented by government records and by British Collector John Henry Garstin.

The Question Vallalar Asked: Can the Body Itself Become Deathless?

For most of human history, the body has been seen as a temporary vessel. It is born, it ages, it sickens, and it dies. Spiritual paths have therefore focused on liberating the soul from this cycle.

Vallalar’s work presents a radical departure. He saw the physical body not as a cage to be escaped, but as a crucible for a profound alchemy. He taught that the same divine grace-light that animates the universe could be drawn into the physical cells, transforming them from mortal substance into an immortal one.

This was not a metaphor. For Vallalar, the goal was the complete eradication of death, sleep, aging, and disease by evolving the physical form into a body of pure light. His teachings provide a precise, step-by-step process for this transformation.

The Three Stages of Bodily Transformation

Vallalar documented three distinct stages of bodily transmutation, moving from a pure physical form to a body made entirely of divine light. Each stage builds upon the last, requiring deeper levels of compassion, purity, and surrender to the Grace-Light.

The Suddha Deham (Pure Body)

The first stage, the Suddha Deham, is the purification of the physical form. This is achieved through specific conduct and, most importantly, a diet completely free from foods obtained through the suffering of other creatures. Vallalar taught that eating meat creates a dense, heavy quality in the body that blocks the flow of grace.

By adopting a compassionate plant-based diet as detailed in his text Nithya Karma Vidhi, and by cultivating a mind of peace and service, the body begins to change. It becomes highly resistant to disease and decay. The aging process slows, and the body develops a natural luminosity and fragrance. It becomes a perfect, pure container ready for the next stage of transformation.

The Pranava Deham (Primal Body)

The second stage is the creation of the Pranava Deham, or Primal Body. As the practitioner’s compassion and devotion deepen, the Grace-Light begins to restructure the body at a fundamental level. The physical elements are gradually replaced by a substance of pure light and sound.

In this stage, the body becomes extremely subtle and light. The need for physical food and even sleep diminishes and eventually ceases. Witnesses documented that Vallalar’s body cast no shadow, a sign of its increasing translucence. The Pranava Deham is not subject to physical laws in the same way, and it can appear and disappear at will. It is a bridge between the physical and the purely spiritual.

The Gnana Deham (Wisdom Body)

The final stage, which Vallalar himself demonstrated, is the Gnana Deham, or Wisdom Body. This is the complete and total dissolution of the physical form into the Vast Grace-Light. It is not death, but a final, glorious transformation. The body ceases to be a separate object and merges entirely with the divine, becoming one with the light of compassion that governs all existence.

This is the ultimate answer to the question of death. Instead of the body being discarded, it is perfected and offered back to its source. The historical accounts of Vallalar’s disappearance, where his physical form vanished without a trace, are understood by his followers as the final evidence of his attainment of the Gnana Deham.

The Daily Practices for How Saints Transcended Physical Death

Vallalar did not present this transformation as a miracle reserved for a chosen few. He laid out a clear set of daily practices available to anyone.

The absolute foundation of this path is Jeeva Karunyam. Vallalar taught that none of these techniques can take root without Jeeva Karunyam β€” active compassion that prevents suffering in other living beings. This begins with the refusal to eat meat, fish, or eggs, as he taught that consuming the fear and pain of animals makes bodily transformation impossible. The first step is always to stop causing harm.

With that foundation, the central practice is the recitation of the Mahamantra, a tool for invoking the Grace-Light directly into one’s being.

AruαΉ Perum Jōti β€” AruαΉ Perum Jōti β€”
TaαΉ‡i Perum KaruαΉ‡ai β€” AruαΉ Perum Jōti

This translates to:

The Vast Grace-Light. The Vast Grace-Light.
The Incomparable Great Compassion. The Vast Grace-Light.

Chanting this mantra, with a sincere heart focused on compassion for all, begins the alchemical process of drawing light into the cells. It is a direct call to the divine intelligence that Vallalar experienced as the ultimate reality.

A Body of Light: Parallels and the Historical Record

While Vallalar’s teachings are distinct, the concept of the body transforming into light is not entirely without parallel. In Tibetan Buddhism, advanced Dzogchen masters are sometimes said to achieve the β€œrainbow body,” where at the time of death, the physical body dissolves into light, leaving behind only hair and nails.

However, Vallalar’s path differs in its aim: the transformation is meant to be a conscious process completed while fully alive, making physical death obsolete. The government records of his final disappearance, overseen by a British official, move this event from the realm of hagiography into documented history. It stands as a powerful indicator that what he taught was something he personally demonstrated.

Begin with Compassion on Your Plate

The grandest spiritual goals begin with the smallest, most concrete actions. The path to the deathless body starts not with complex meditation, but with what you choose to eat.

Replace one animal-based meal today with a plant-based option from Vallalar’s Nithya Karma Vidhi: rice, lentils, or stem vegetables like drumstick (Moringa). Notice the feeling of lightness that follows, both in body and in conscience. This small act of compassion is the first and most vital step.
