The Saint-Scientist Vallalar has a precise answer for what you came here for, which is how do you develop compassion. Itβs a question that often arises not from the head, but from a quiet ache in the heart. Here, you will learn the one practice Vallalar placed at the center of his entire pathβa practice that requires no conversion, no intermediary, and no belief system.
Much writing on compassion offers concepts and meditations. Vallalar offered something different: a direct, active principle that changes the body and mind from the outside in. To understand how this works, we must first look at the man who lived it.
The Life and Teachings of Vallalar

Ramalinga Swamigal, known as Vallalar, was a 19th-century Tamil mystic whose collected writings, the Thiru Arutpa, remain one of the most extraordinary spiritual records ever produced. His life was filled with remarkable feats β though he dismissed anything supernatural, insisting that everything he did was a science. He established a path called Suddha Sanmargam, the Pure Path of Virtue, and a free feeding house that has operated continuously for over 150 years, feeding anyone who comes, regardless of background.
On January 30, 1874, accounts from those present record that he locked himself in a room in Mettukuppam and was never seen again β his body never found. This event is documented by government records and by British Collector John Henry Garstin.
The Prayer for Incomparable Compassion
At the heart of Vallalarβs daily practice is a simple but powerful mantra. He taught that its recitation attunes the individual to the source of all compassion and grace. This is not a request for something you lack, but an invocation of what is already present in the universe, waiting to be received.
The Mahamantra is:
AruαΉ Perum JΕti β AruαΉ Perum JΕti β
TaαΉi Perum KaruαΉai β AruαΉ Perum JΕti
This translates to:
The Vast Grace-Light. The Vast Grace-Light.
The Incomparable Great Compassion. The Vast Grace-Light.
Reciting this, even for a few minutes daily, turns oneβs attention toward the very qualities they seek to develop. It is a direct call to the divine principle Vallalar called Arut Perum Jyothi.
Suddha Sanmargam: A Path Open to Everyone
Vallalar was clear that his path, Suddha Sanmargam, belongs to no religion, caste, or country. He built it for every human being who seeks God sincerely, regardless of their background. There is no conversion ritual, no formal initiation, and no priest or guru who must act as an intermediary between you and the divine.
The path is radically accessible. It does not ask you to change your beliefs, only your actions. Vallalar saw the worldβs religions as beautiful schools, each teaching valuable lessons. But he taught that at a certain point, one must graduate from the school and step onto the open road. Suddha Sanmargam was designed to be that road.
Its foundation is not a set of doctrines to be memorized but a single, profound principle to be lived. This principle is the key to unlocking compassion not as a fleeting emotion, but as a permanent state of being.
Jeeva Karunyam: The Answer to How Do You Develop Compassion
The single requirement for walking the Pure Path is Jeeva Karunyam. This Tamil term is often translated as βcompassion,β but its meaning is more specific and active. It is compassion in practice, defined as the unwavering commitment to not causing suffering to any living being.
For Vallalar, compassion was not a feeling to be cultivated through meditation. It was a choice expressed through action. He taught that true compassion arises from the direct recognition that every living creatureβfrom the smallest insect to the largest animalβexperiences fear and pain, and has a will to live.
This understanding moves beyond simple empathy. It becomes a guiding rule for living. The core practice of Jeeva Karunyam is the refusal to participate in acts that cause terror, pain, or death to other beings. Vallalar taught that eating meat, for example, is a direct violation of Jeeva Karunyam, as it requires inflicting suffering for the sake of oneβs own pleasure.
By practicing Jeeva Karunyam, you are not trying to feel compassionate. You are acting compassionately. Vallalar taught that the feeling naturally follows the action, not the other way around.
How Active Compassion Invokes Divine Grace
Why did Vallalar place such emphasis on this single, practical discipline? Because he taught that Jeeva Karunyam is the very quality of God, or Arut Perum Jyothi. When a person aligns their actions with this principle, they become a vessel for that divine grace-light.
According to his teachings, the act of preventing suffering in another being clears the subtle channels of the body and mind. It removes the hardness and selfishness that block the flow of grace. The sincere call to Arut Perum Jyothi, combined with the daily practice of Jeeva Karunyam, creates a powerful magnetic pull.
This is not a transactional relationship where good deeds are rewarded. Instead, it is a law of spiritual science: like attracts like. A being who embodies active compassion naturally attunes themselves to the Incomparable Great Compassion of the universe. This is how compassion developsβnot by force of will, but by making oneself a clear channel for it.
One Action You Can Take Before Your Next Meal
You donβt need to change your entire life today to begin. You only need to change your awareness for a single moment.
Before you eat your next meal, pause. Look at the food on your plate and ask a simple question: βDid any living being have to suffer or die for this meal?β You do not need to judge the answer or yourself. Just ask the question and sit with the reality of it for a few seconds.
Vallalar taught that this honest seeing is the first step. It is the beginning of Jeeva Karunyam, the seed from which a compassionate life grows.
