The Saint-Scientist Vallalar has a precise answer for what you came here for, which is grace light meditation practice. Itβs a common experience to feel a longing for something more luminous, more real. Below, you will find the specific stages of bodily transformation Vallalar documented in Thiru Arutpa β and the daily practice he gave to begin that process. While many traditions speak of mystical light, Vallalar described a direct, repeatable science for embodying it. To understand how he could make such a claim, we need to look at the man himself.
The Life and Teachings of Vallalar

Ramalinga Swamigal, known as Vallalar, was a 19th-century Tamil mystic whose collected writings, the Thiru Arutpa, remain one of the most extraordinary spiritual records ever produced. His life was filled with remarkable feats β though he dismissed anything supernatural, insisting that everything he did was a science. He established a center for feeding the poor that still operates today, serving thousands of free meals daily, based on his central principle of compassion. On January 30, 1874, accounts from those present record that he locked himself in a room in Mettukuppam and was never seen again β his body never found. This event is documented by government records and by British Collector John Henry Garstin.
Arut Perum Jyothi: The Vast Grace-Light
For Vallalar, the experience of divine light was not a concept or a poetic metaphor. It was the central reality of existence. He named it Arut Perum Jyothi β the Vast Grace-Light. Across the six volumes of his poetic work, the Thiru Arutpa, he documents his progressive encounters with this light, describing it as a conscious, intelligent, and compassionate presence that is both the source of creation and the ultimate destiny of the human body.
Mystical experiences of light appear in nearly every spiritual tradition, but they are often described as fleeting visions or states of consciousness. Vallalarβs teaching is different. He presented the Vast Grace-Light as a tangible reality that could be stabilized, integrated, and ultimately used to transform the physical body itself into a permanent form of light. He did not ask for belief; he offered a methodology.
The Three Stages of Embodying the Grace-Light
Vallalar documented a three-stage process of physical transformation, moving from a dense, mortal body to an immortal body of pure light. He taught that this was not a miracle reserved for him, but a potential available to any human being who follows the path of compassion and purity.
The first stage is the Suddha Deham, or Pure Body. This is achieved through the unwavering practice of Jeeva Karunyam β active compassion for all living beings β and a specific sattvic, plant-based diet. Vallalar taught that consuming meat and causing fear or suffering in other creatures coarsens the physical body, making it impossible for the subtle grace-light to take root. By purifying oneβs actions and diet, the physical form becomes refined, resilient to disease, and prepared for the next stage.
The second stage is the Pranava Deham, or Primal Body. As the practitioner continues to attune to the Vast Grace-Light, the purified physical body begins to change its fundamental nature. It becomes increasingly subtle, luminous, and less dependent on gross food. This is an extremely advanced state where the body is perceived as being made of divine sound and light.
The final stage, which Vallalar documented as his own experience, is the Gnana Deham, or Wisdom Body. This is the complete and irreversible transformation of the physical form into the substance of Arut Perum Jyothi. The body becomes a deathless, effulgent form of pure grace. While this has parallels to concepts like the Tibetan Rainbow Body, Vallalarβs account is one of a methodical, scientific process of dissolving the physical into the divine without the event of death.
How to Begin a Grace Light Meditation Practice
Vallalarβs path to experiencing the grace-light is not based on complex postures or esoteric breathing techniques. It is grounded in simple, consistent, and compassionate daily action. The entire practice rests on one foundational principle.
Vallalar taught that none of these techniques can take root without Jeeva Karunyam β active compassion that prevents suffering in other living beings. This begins with the commitment to a non-violent, plant-based diet, which he detailed in his text Nithya Karma Vidhi. He insisted that a body built from the suffering of other creatures cannot become a vessel for grace. Compassion is the soil; without it, nothing else can grow.
With compassion as the foundation, the central practice is the recitation of the mantra he received and gave to the world:
AruαΉ Perum JΕti β AruαΉ Perum JΕti β
TaαΉi Perum KaruαΉai β AruαΉ Perum JΕti
The meaning is: βThe Vast Grace-Light. The Vast Grace-Light. The Incomparable Great Compassion. The Vast Grace-Light.β
This is not merely a string of words. Vallalar taught that the mantra is a direct invocation that attunes the mind, heart, and physical cells to the frequency of the Vast Grace-Light. Reciting it silently or aloud draws that presence into oneβs awareness and begins the subtle work of inner purification.
A person begins this practice by simply reciting the mantra for a few minutes each morning. Over weeks, they might notice a subtle shift. When faced with a moment of anger or frustration, the feeling of compassion from the mantra arises more easily, softening the reaction. This is the first sign of the practice taking root.
One Concrete Action to Take Today
Before you do anything else, find a quiet place and spend five minutes reciting the Mahamantra. Do not try to achieve a special state or have a profound experience. Simply focus on the meaning of the words: Vast Grace-Light, Incomparable Compassion. Let the sound and intention be your entire focus. This is the first step on the path Vallalar laid out.
