The Saint-Scientist Vallalar has a precise answer for what you came here for, which is god grace experience spiritual. This article explains the one non-negotiable condition Vallalar identified for receiving divine graceβand the three stages of bodily transformation that result from it. That search for something real, something you can feel, is not a mistake. Much writing about spiritual grace stays at the level of concept without a precise path. Vallalar offered a direct instruction, not a philosophy to debate. To understand why his instruction carries such weight, we must look at the man who gave it.
The Life and Teachings of Vallalar

Ramalinga Swamigal, known as Vallalar, was a 19th-century Tamil mystic whose collected writings, the Thiru Arutpa, remain one of the most extraordinary spiritual records ever produced. His life was filled with remarkable featsβthough he dismissed anything supernatural, insisting that everything he did was a science. He established a center for feeding the poor that still operates today, feeding thousands without interruption since 1867. On January 30, 1874, accounts from those present record that he locked himself in a room in Mettukuppam and was never seen againβhis body never found. This event is documented by government records and by British Collector John Henry Garstin.
Why Compassion is the Only Key to Divine Grace
In his text Jeevakarunyam Ozhukkam (The Discipline of Compassion), Vallalar makes a statement that separates his teaching from many others. He states that the only way to receive divine grace is to show compassion to all living beings. This is not a suggestion or a helpful addition to other practices. He presents it as the sole condition.
According to Vallalar, prayer alone is not enough. Rituals, austerities, and isolated devotion, while potentially beneficial, do not open the door to grace. Only Jeeva Karunyamβactive compassion that seeks to alleviate the hunger and suffering of othersβcan do so. He taught that when a person feels the pain of another being as their own and acts to relieve it, they create the necessary space within themselves for the divine grace-light, Arut Perum Jyothi, to enter. This was not a theory for him; it was a report of his own direct experience.
How a True god grace experience spiritual Transforms the Body
For Vallalar, grace was not merely an emotional or psychological event. It was a tangible substance, a vast grace-light that, once received, begins a systematic and scientific transformation of the physical body. He documented this process in three distinct stages, each with observable characteristics. The experience of divine grace is the cause, and the transformation of the body is the effect.
This path begins not with complex meditation, but with the simple, consistent practice of compassion. Vallalar taught that none of the advanced techniques or bodily changes can take root without Jeeva Karunyamβactive compassion that prevents suffering in other living beings. The choice to not cause harm, particularly through diet, and the active choice to feed the hungry, are the foundation upon which the entire structure is built.
Vallalar detailed a progression where the mortal body is methodically rebuilt into an immortal body of light. This is a science of grace, with each stage representing a deeper saturation of the physical form with Arut Perum Jyothi.
The first stage is the Suddha Deham, or Pure Body. This is achieved through a life of consistent compassion and a diet free from any animal products, as detailed in his text Nithya Karma Vidhi. Vallalar taught that eating meat and causing fear or pain to animals creates a dense, heavy quality in the body that blocks the flow of grace. By eliminating this and actively practicing kindness, the body begins to purify. Its physical signs include a natural radiance, a reduction in sleep, and the elimination of bodily waste and sweat. A person practicing this might notice, after a month of feeding birds each morning and eating simple plant-based meals, that the chronic fatigue they once felt has been replaced by a quiet, steady energy.
Next is the Pranava Deham, or Primal Body. As the practitioner deepens their experience of grace, the physical body becomes increasingly subtle. Witnesses described Vallalarβs body at this stage as becoming translucent, casting no shadow. The body is no longer dependent on physical food but is nourished directly by the grace-light. The central practice for cultivating this state is the constant recitation of the Mahamantra, which invokes the grace-light directly:
AruαΉ Perum JΕti β AruαΉ Perum JΕti β
TaαΉi Perum KaruαΉai β AruαΉ Perum JΕti
This translates to: βThe Vast Grace-Light. The Vast Grace-Light. The Incomparable Great Compassion. The Vast Grace-Light.β
The final stage, the Gnana Deham or Wisdom Body, is the complete transformation of the physical form into pure light. In this state, the body is eternal, indestructible, and capable of appearing anywhere at will. Based on the Thiru Arutpa and accounts from those who knew him, Vallalar is the one who fully demonstrated this final attainment, culminating in his physical disappearance. While this state has parallels in other traditions, such as the Tibetan rainbow body, Vallalarβs account is unique in its detailed, scientific framing of the process.
Feed One Hungry Being Before Your Next Meal
To begin this process today, Vallalarβs instruction is direct and practical. Before you sit down for your next meal, find one living being that is hungry and feed it. This could be a person in need, a stray animal on the street, or birds in your yard.
This is not a symbolic gesture. It is the foundational act of Jeeva Karunyam. By placing the needs of another being before your own, you are performing the one action Vallalar identified as the key that opens the door to grace. Do this not as a chore or for spiritual credit, but from a genuine feeling for the hunger of another. This simple act starts the entire process.
