Divine Light Healing Meditation: Vallalar’s Mahamantra

Vallalar’s way to meditate on the divine light is to repeat one short invocation, slowly and with your whole heart: Arut Perum Jyoti, Arut Perum Jyoti, Thani Perum Karunai, Arut Perum Jyoti. He taught that this Grace Light heals, and that it is open to anyone who lives with compassion for all beings.

You may already have felt something of it in a quiet moment: a warmth, a sense of being held. Below is how to sit, what the words mean, and how to begin with five minutes a day.

Vallalar (Ramalinga Adigal, 1823–1874) received this invocation and taught it openly, to everyone. More about his life.

What Is the Vast Grace-Light?

Arut Perum Jyothi β€” the Vast Grace-Light β€” is the central experience and the name of God in Vallalar’s teaching. He did not speak of it as a concept or a metaphor. He encountered it as a direct, visible, luminous presence and documented that encounter across six Thirumurai of his poetic work, Thiru Arutpa.

For Vallalar, this was not a distant, unknowable force. It was an intelligent, compassionate, and healing light that sustains all life. Mystical experiences of light across traditions often point to a similar reality, but Vallalar named it, described its qualities, and gave a specific practice by which any human being can begin to attune to it. He presented it not as a faith to be believed in, but as a presence to be experienced.

This Grace-Light is the source of all healing and transformation. The meditation he taught is not about emptying the mind but about filling the self with this specific, powerful light until the body itself is remade by it.

How to Practice Divine Light Healing Meditation with the Mahamantra

Vallalar’s method for attuning to the Grace-Light is direct and accessible. It is centered on the recitation of a Mahamantra, or Great Mantra, that he received and shared. It is not a prayer asking for something, but a statement of reality that tunes the person chanting it to the frequency of Grace.

The mantra is:

AruαΉ Perum Jōti β€” AruαΉ Perum Jōti β€”
TaαΉ‡i Perum KaruαΉ‡ai β€” AruαΉ Perum Jōti

The meaning is:

The Vast Grace-Light. The Vast Grace-Light.
The Incomparable Great Compassion. The Vast Grace-Light.

To practice, find a quiet space. Sit comfortably and begin to recite the mantra, either aloud or silently. The goal is not mechanical repetition but a heartfelt calling. Feel the meaning of the words. You are invoking a reality, inviting the Vast Grace-Light to become the center of your awareness. This sound itself is considered a conduit for the light.

The Three Stages of Embodying the Light

Vallalar taught that consistent practice of the Mahamantra, combined with a life of compassion, could lead to a physical transformation of the human body. He described this process in three distinct stages.

Crucially, Vallalar taught that none of these techniques can take root without Jeeva Karunyam β€” active compassion that prevents suffering in other living beings. This begins with a plant-based diet, as he identified the consumption of meat as a primary block to spiritual progress. His text, Nithya Karma Vidhi, outlines a simple, pure diet that supports this process.

The first stage is the Suddha Deham, or Pure Body. This body is free from disease, aging, and the impurities caused by a life disconnected from compassion. It is achieved through a compassionate lifestyle, a pure diet, and the steady practice of the Mahamantra.

The second stage is the Pranava Deham, or Primal Body. In this form, the physical body becomes more subtle and luminous, visible to some but not all. It is a body of sound and light that is no longer subject to the ordinary laws of physics.

The final stage, which Vallalar himself demonstrated, is the Gnana Deham, or Wisdom Body. This is the complete dissolution of the physical form into the Vast Grace-Light. The individual consciousness merges fully with the divine, existing as a body of pure light. This state has parallels in other traditions, such as the Tibetan Rainbow Body, where advanced masters are said to dissolve their physical forms at death.

Start with the Sound of Grace-Light

You do not need to aim for the final stages to begin. The path starts with a single step, taken today. Before you check your phone or start your work, find five minutes. Sit and recite the Mahamantra. Do not look for an immediate result or a dramatic experience. Simply introduce the sound and its meaning into your awareness. Let the words β€œVast Grace-Light” and β€œIncomparable Great Compassion” be the first reality you connect with today. This is the simple, powerful start of the entire process.
