The Saint-Scientist Vallalar has a precise answer for what you came here for, which is can the body become immortal.
If you are asking this question, it is not a casual inquiry. It comes from a place of deep pain, perhaps from witnessing the fragility of a body you love, or from feeling the profound ache of your own mortality. This isn’t a philosophical game; it’s a question that arrives when life presses in hard, demanding to know if this cycle of birth and decay is the only truth. Vallalar knew this state, and he did not offer comforting beliefs. He offered a science.
While many spiritual traditions speak of the soul’s immortality, Vallalar’s teaching is distinctively focused on the physical body itself. He laid out a precise, repeatable process for transforming it from corruptible flesh into an eternal body of grace-light. To understand his answer, we need to look at the man who documented it and, by all accounts, demonstrated its final stage.
The Life and Teachings of Vallalar

Ramalinga Swamigal, known as Vallalar, was a 19th-century Tamil mystic whose collected writings, the Thiru Arutpa, remain one of the most extraordinary spiritual records ever produced. His life was filled with remarkable feats — though he dismissed anything supernatural, insisting that everything he did was a science. He taught a path of universal compassion and worship of a formless Supreme Being as a Vast Grace-Light.
On January 30, 1874, accounts from those present record that he locked himself in a room in Mettukuppam and was never seen again — his body never found. This event is documented by government records and by British Collector John Henry Garstin.
From Metaphor to a Meticulous Science
In most spiritual paths, physical immortality is a myth or a metaphor for the soul’s eternal nature. For Vallalar, it was the explicit and documented destination of his science, the Sanmarkkam. He did not speak in vague terms. He detailed a step-by-step biological transformation of the physical body.
This process is not based on secret rituals or divine boons. It is a replicable science founded on two pillars: a specific way of living and the invocation of the divine grace-light, which he called Arut Perum Jothi. He taught that the human body is not a fixed object but a mutable vessel, capable of being refined from gross matter into a substance that does not decay.
How can the body become immortal? The Three-Stage Transformation
Vallalar documented three distinct, sequential stages of bodily transformation in his writings, primarily the Thiru Arutpa. This is not a path of transcending the body, but of perfecting it until it becomes a vehicle of pure light.
Stage 1: Suddha Deham (The Pure Body)
The first stage begins with purifying the physical form. This is not about asceticism but about removing the elements that cause decay and densification. The primary tool for this is a plant-based diet, detailed in his text Nithya Karma Vidhi. Vallalar taught that eating meat creates suffering, and the body cannot begin to hold light while it is built from the fear and pain of other beings.
This purification is powered by a foundational practice: Jeeva Karunyam. Vallalar taught that none of these techniques can take root without Jeeva Karunyam — active compassion that prevents suffering in other living beings. It is this compassion that opens the body to receive grace. The central mantra for this stage is the constant inner recitation of the Mahamantra, which calls the grace-light into the cells:
Aruṭ Perum Jōti — Aruṭ Perum Jōti — Taṇi Perum Karuṇai — Aruṭ Perum Jōti
This translates to: The Vast Grace-Light. The Vast Grace-Light. The Incomparable Great Compassion. The Vast Grace-Light.
As the body is purified through compassionate living and the invocation of grace-light, it begins to change its fundamental nature. The Suddha Deham evolves into the Pranava Deham, or Primal Body. This body is described as becoming increasingly subtle, luminous, and resistant to disease, aging, and injury.
It is a body made more of light and sound than of dense matter. Those who achieve this state, according to Vallalar’s teachings, may appear youthful and radiant, and their physical needs for food and sleep diminish significantly. This is not a supernatural state but the natural result of the body’s operating system being upgraded from a carbon-based form to one based on light.
Stage 3: Gnana Deham (The Wisdom Body)
The final stage is the Gnana Deham, the Body of Wisdom. Vallalar is the historical exemplar of this ultimate transformation. In this stage, the physical structure dissolves entirely into the Vast Grace-Light. The body becomes a non-physical, eternal form of pure consciousness and light, no longer bound by space or time.
This is the state that accounts for his final disappearance. He did not die; he completed the transformation. This concept finds a distant parallel in the Tibetan tradition of the “rainbow body,” but Vallalar’s account is unique in its scientific precision and historical documentation. He presented the Gnana Deham as the final, logical outcome of a life lived in total harmony with compassion and grace.
Start with One Act of Compassion Today
The path to a deathless body does not begin with complex yogic practices or esoteric knowledge. According to Vallalar, it begins with a single, simple act of compassion. The entire science of bodily transformation is built upon the foundation of Jeeva Karunyam.
Before you do anything else, find one living being that is hungry and feed it. This could be a stray dog, a bird in your yard, or a person in need. As you perform this act, do not see it as charity. Understand it as the first step in a profound biological process.
You might notice a stray cat that looks thin and hungry. Instead of just feeling a momentary pang of pity, you could put out a small bowl of food and fresh water. In that moment, as you watch the animal eat, Vallalar taught that you are doing more than a kind deed; you are fundamentally altering your own cellular structure, making it more receptive to the grace-light that fuels the entire transformation.
