The Saint-Scientist Vallalar has a precise answer for what you came here for, which is body purification spiritual path. Below, you will find the three-stage body transformation Vallalar documented in Thiru Arutpa β and what each stage actually requires. You may have noticed that most spiritual traditions answer the question of death by describing what happens to the soul after it leaves the body. Vallalar asked a different question: what if the body itself could be transformed so that physical death becomes unnecessary? To understand his answer, we need to look at the man who claimed to have achieved it.
The Life and Teachings of Vallalar

Ramalinga Swamigal, known as Vallalar, was a 19th-century Tamil mystic whose collected writings, the Thiru Arutpa, remain one of the most extraordinary spiritual records ever produced. His life was filled with remarkable feats β though he dismissed anything supernatural, insisting that everything he did was a science. He taught a path of universal compassion and self-purification, open to anyone regardless of caste, creed, or religion. On January 30, 1874, accounts from those present record that he locked himself in a room in Mettukuppam and was never seen again β his body never found. This event is documented by government records and by British Collector John Henry Garstin.
Why Vallalarβs Body Purification Spiritual Path Is Different
The core of Vallalarβs teaching diverges from the common spiritual goal of liberating the soul from the body. He saw the body not as a temporary vessel to be discarded, but as a crucible for a radical alchemical process. His path, called the Suddha Sanmarkkam (the True Path), is aimed at the complete transmutation of the physical form into a body of pure divine light, or Arut Perum JΕti.
This is not a metaphor for inner enlightenment. It is a literal, physiological transformation. Vallalar documented this process in detail, presenting it as a replicable science of the spirit. The goal is not an afterlife for the soul, but a deathless life in a perfected, luminous body, rendering physical dissolution obsolete. This makes his approach to bodily purification categorically different from fasting or health regimens aimed merely at physical well-being.
The Foundation: Compassion, Diet, and Divine Light
Before any transformation can begin, the ground must be prepared. Vallalar taught that the entire process is impossible without two foundational practices: Jeeva Karunyam and a specific plant-based diet.
Vallalar taught that none of these techniques can take root without Jeeva Karunyam β active compassion that prevents suffering in other living beings. This is not a passive feeling of goodwill. It is the non-negotiable practice of not killing and not consuming any creature that has experienced fear or pain. He stated that the subtle agitation and dense energies absorbed from eating meat make the bodyβs purification impossible. His text, Nithya Karma Vidhi, outlines a precise diet centered on easily digestible plants, grains, and vegetables that support lightness and clarity.
The second practice is the constant remembrance and recitation of the Mahamantra, a call to the divine grace-light that powers the transformation:
AruαΉ Perum JΕti β AruαΉ Perum JΕti β
TaαΉi Perum KaruαΉai β AruαΉ Perum JΕti
This translates to: The Vast Grace-Light. The Vast Grace-Light. The Incomparable Great Compassion. The Vast Grace-Light. Chanting this mantra is not a request for intervention, but an act of tuning the body and consciousness to the frequency of that divine light.
The Three Stages of Bodily Transformation
Vallalar documented three distinct stages of bodily transmutation. Each stage represents a profound shift in the physical structure, moving from dense matter toward pure light.
Suddha Deham: The Pure Body
The first stage is the Suddha Deham, or Pure Body. This is the result of sustained Jeeva Karunyam, a purified diet, and the constant invocation of the grace-light. The physical body becomes free from disease, waste, aging, and the need for sleep. Its flesh and blood are gradually refined, becoming luminous and emitting a subtle fragrance. Practitioners at this stage often report a feeling of profound lightness and clarity. This is the stage where the physical form is perfected and made immune to natural decay.
The second stage is the Pranava Deham, or Primal Body. This is a far more dramatic shift. The purified physical form of the Suddha Deham transforms into a body that is visible but not tangible, composed of light and sound. Vallalar describes it as a form that appears to be between five and eight years of age, unaffected by the elements. It can pass through solid matter and is no longer bound by conventional physics. This body is the bridge between the material world and the purely spiritual, a form made of the primal creative force.
Gnana Deham: The Wisdom Body
The final stage, which historical accounts and his own writings attribute to Vallalar himself, is the Gnana Deham, or Wisdom Body. In this ultimate transformation, the Primal Body dissolves completely into the Vast Grace-Light. The individual form merges with the formless, becoming omnipresent and one with the divine. There is no longer a body, only the infinite expanse of compassionate light. This is the culmination of the path β not an escape from the world, but the complete transformation of a physical being into the divine substance of the world itself.
Is This Similar to the Merkaba or Rainbow Body?
Those familiar with other esoteric systems may see parallels. The concept of a βlight body,β such as the Merkaba in some mystical traditions, shares the idea of a vehicle for consciousness. However, Vallalarβs Pranava Deham is not described as a vehicle but as a transformation of the physical body itself.
The closest comparison might be the βrainbow bodyβ (Jalu) in the Tibetan Dzogchen tradition, where a masterβs physical body is said to dissolve into light at the time of death, sometimes leaving behind only hair and nails. The key distinction is that Vallalarβs path is aimed at achieving this transformation while living, making physical death an unnecessary event rather than the trigger for dissolution.
One Concrete Action to Start Today
The path to the Suddha Deham begins with a single, conscious choice. Replace one animal-based meal today with a plant-based option from Vallalarβs Nithya Karma Vidhi: rice, lentils, or stem vegetables like drumstick (Moringa) or brinjal (eggplant). As you eat, consider that this choice prevents suffering for another living being. This simple act of compassion is the first step in purifying the physical vessel.
