The Saint-Scientist Vallalar has a precise answer for what you came here for, which is ancient immortality secrets. To be searching for this is to feel the bodyβs fragility as an unbearable fact, not a distant idea. It often comes from a place of deep pain or fear β a confrontation with loss that makes ordinary life feel temporary and unsafe. I know this search isnβt a game of fantasy for you; it is a real and pressing ache for something permanent. Vallalar taught that this ache is not a delusion but an instinct pointing toward a biological possibility. While many traditions speak of immortality as a metaphor for the soul, Vallalar laid out a step-by-step, scientific process for transforming the physical body into an indestructible form of light.
To understand how he could make such a claim, we need to look at the man who documented it.
The Life and Teachings of Vallalar

Ramalinga Swamigal, known as Vallalar, was a 19th-century Tamil mystic whose collected writings, the Thiru Arutpa, remain one of the most extraordinary spiritual records ever produced. His life was filled with remarkable feats β though he dismissed anything supernatural, insisting that everything he did was a science. He demonstrated that the divine Grace-Light, which he called Arut Perum Jothi, could fuel lamps, heal the sick, and ultimately, transmute the physical body itself. On January 30, 1874, accounts from those present record that he locked himself in a room in Mettukuppam and was never seen again β his body never found. This event is documented by government records and by British Collector John Henry Garstin.
Beyond Metaphor: A Science of the Deathless Body
In most spiritual traditions, physical immortality is a myth or a symbolic concept representing the soulβs eternal nature. For Vallalar, it was the explicit, documented destination of his path, Sanmarkkam. His six-volume poetic work, Thiru Arutpa (βThe Holy Book of Graceβ), is not a collection of philosophical ideas but a detailed laboratory notebook. It outlines the precise science of transforming the gross, perishable human body into a deathless body of Grace-Light.
He insisted this was not a miracle reserved for a chosen few, but a natural, though highly advanced, state of human evolution. He saw the body not as a sinful trap to be escaped, but as a vessel capable of being purified and perfected until it became a permanent vehicle for consciousness, free from disease, decay, and death. This radical claim is the foundation of his entire teaching.
The Three-Stage Transformation: How ancient immortality secrets work
Vallalar documented a three-stage process for this bodily transformation. Each stage is a distinct, verifiable state of being, moving the body from dense matter to pure, intelligent light. This process is not a passive one; it is fueled by specific daily practices, the most important of which is compassion.
Stage 1: Suddha Deham β The Pure Body
The journey begins with the Suddha Deham, or Pure Body. This is the foundational stage of purification. Vallalar taught that the body becomes dense, diseased, and mortal primarily through the consumption of fear, pain, and death β specifically, by eating the flesh of other animals. The first and most critical step is therefore adopting a purely plant-based diet, which he detailed in a text called Nithya Karma Vidhi.
Alongside diet, this stage is powered by Jeeva Karunyam β active compassion and service to all living beings. Vallalar taught that none of these techniques can take root without Jeeva Karunyam β active compassion that prevents suffering in other living beings. The constant, intentional practice of kindness and feeding the hungry purifies the inner state, which in turn purifies the physical cells. The central mantra for this stage is the constant recitation of the Mahamantra, which directly invokes the Grace-Light:
AruαΉ Perum JΕti β AruαΉ Perum JΕti β
TaαΉi Perum KaruαΉai β AruαΉ Perum JΕti
This translates to: βThe Vast Grace-Light. The Vast Grace-Light. The Incomparable Great Compassion. The Vast Grace-Light.β Chanting this fills the body with the very substance needed for its transformation.
As the practices of the Suddha Deham stage mature, the body begins to change its fundamental nature. It transitions into the Pranava Deham, or Primal Body. This is often described as a body of sound and light. The physical form becomes subtler, less dependent on gross food, and increasingly nourished directly by the Grace-Light.
Witnesses documented that Vallalarβs own body in this stage cast no shadow and that he appeared to be ageless. The Pranava Deham is no longer subject to the same biological laws. It becomes luminous, highly refined, and resistant to physical harm or decay. It is a bridge between the material world and the world of pure light.
Stage 3: Gnana Deham β The Wisdom Body
The final stage, the Gnana Deham or Wisdom Body, is the complete and final transformation. In this state, the physical structure dissolves entirely, merging with the Vast Grace-Light to become a permanent, indestructible body of light. Vallalar is the only figure historically documented to have described and demonstrated this final outcome. His disappearance at Mettukuppam is considered the evidence of his attainment of the Gnana Deham.
This is a state of being completely one with divine consciousness, yet retaining a form made of its essential substance. While some esoteric traditions, like the Tibetan concept of the Rainbow Body, describe a dissolution of the physical form at death, Vallalarβs teaching details a conscious, living transmutation into a deathless, ever-present body of grace.
What This Path Requires Today
Vallalarβs path to a deathless body is not based on secret rituals, complex yoga postures, or intellectual study. It is built on a foundation of radical, active compassion. He taught that the key to making the body immortal is to stop participating in the cycle of death and suffering.
The fear and pain an animal experiences at its death becomes, according to his teaching, a part of the person who consumes it, embedding mortality into the very cells of the body. By refusing to cause harm and actively working to alleviate the suffering of others β especially hunger β a practitioner begins to undo this conditioning. The body, freed from the burden of inflicting death, can begin its own transformation into a vessel of light. A person who commits to this path might notice, after months of compassionate living and a clean diet, a new sense of physical lightness and mental clarity that feels fundamentally different from simple good health. This is the first echo of the Suddha Deham.
One Concrete Action You Can Take Now
The first step is always the most practical. For your next meal, choose a plant-based option that Vallalar recommended in his Nithya Karma Vidhi, such as rice with lentils, or cooked stem vegetables like brinjal (eggplant) or drumstick (Moringa). Before you eat, take one moment to hold the awareness that this food came to you without causing fear or violence to any living being. This small act of conscious compassion is the starting point of the entire science.
